How It Works

The farmers group is identified by  Send a Cow Uganda and in most cases are already working with them on their 3 year programme.

We try to personally meet the farmers, but with the number of groups growing all the time, this is not always possible.  We now work with 29 groups (over 1,000 households).

We hear about their motivation, enthusiasm and commitment to creating a better life for themselves and their children. The farmers share their challenges and needs with us so we know we are responding directly to them. The farmers must show that they are honest, trustworthy and hard-working.

A Simple Process
  1. The farmers inform Seeds for Development of the amount required by the group.

  2. The money is transferred to the farmers group bank account or via Send a Cow Uganda.

  3. Collectively, the farmers purchase the seeds and other inputs which are then distributed to the individual farmers.

  4. After the harvest, the farmers sell their crop – either as seed or fresh produce at the local market.  We are encouraging the farmers to co-operate and sell as one large group rather than individuals.

  5. The farmers then repay the value of the seeds they received to the group.

  6. The money is then used by the group as "rolling credit" or to support other farmers.

The model is constantly evolving as we grow and develop.

We meet with the farmers to hear their challenges first-hand.
