Story Competition
A few months ago we ran a story telling competition so we could learn about life through the eyes and words of the children.
The competition was run at Opit Modern Primary School in Gulu, where there are 16 children being sponsored by Seeds for Development.
We received 214 stories! They are amazing and with great difficulty we have chosen 43 for our short-ish list.

The Stories
Lamaro Preyos
Preyos, 5, is in Primary Two and already talks about the future at home. She helps with small tasks and plays with friends. She dreams of becoming a teacher who helps children learn well and inspires better futures for her community.

Omara Emmanuel
Emmanuel, 10, lives in Gulu District with his family and is inspired by his mother who is a tailor. At home he helps with small tasks. He dreams of becoming a tailor like her, working with dedication and supporting his family through skill.

Lamaro Daphine
Daphine, 10, lives with her family and once helped her brother after a snake bite using herbal medicine. At home she helps with chores. She dreams of becoming a doctor who heals with kindness and careful attention to every patient she meets.

Elvis
Elvis, 10, lives with his parents, sister and brother and helps with home chores like shopping and cooking. He enjoys learning and spending time with family. He dreams of becoming a surgeon who performs operations, treats sick people and saves many lives.

Amaro Rwot Gladys
Gladys, 11, helps her parents with poultry at home and uses the manure to grow crops. She feeds chickens, ducks and pigeons. Inspired by her sister, she dreams of becoming a soldier who will protect her family and community.

Laker Molly Prisca
Molly, 11, practises English every day because her family encourages it. At home she helps with small chores. She dreams of becoming a journalist who appears on television and teaches others through clear reporting and thoughtful storytelling.

Akot Zakia
Zakia, 11, lives in Amuru District with her mother and sister. During the holidays she helps at home and enjoys playing football, netball and volleyball. She dreams of becoming a doctor and one day travelling abroad while caring for her mother.

Auma Deborah
Deborah, 11, helps her mother at Kabedopong market by calling customers and washing sweet potatoes. At home she plays with nieces and nephews. She dreams of becoming a surgeon who researches cervical cancer and builds her parents a house.

Adong Gifty Mary
Mary, 12, helps her mother at the market by calling customers. At home she enjoys playing with her brothers and sister. She dreams of becoming a surgeon who researches cervical cancer and finds solutions for women’s health.

Onen Emmanuel Nenson
Onen Emmanuel, 12, lives with his siblings after losing both parents and faces hardship at home. He studies and helps when he can. He dreams of becoming a tourist who supports his family and hopes to make discoveries about space and history.

Lakica Angel Emilia
Angel, 12, lives in Gulu City with her family and is inspired by her father who recovered from a serious accident. At home she helps with chores. She dreams of becoming a surgical doctor who saves lives, especially mothers and babies during childbirth.

Amito Kiden Robina
Robina, 12, lives in Keyo and enjoys watching the sky. At home she helps her mother and plays with friends. She dreams of becoming an aeroplane engineer who invents a carplane and uses her success to support orphans, widows and her community.

Laker Angel Tiana
Angel, 12, helps her family with chores and looks after her siblings at home. She enjoys school and works hard. She dreams of becoming a bank manager so she can support orphans by paying school fees and offering encouragement for their future.

Aber Hope
Hope, 12, collects firewood with her sisters and once helped after a snake bit her sister’s leg. At home she helps her mother. She dreams of becoming a lawyer who teaches people about the law and helps resolve land disputes in her community.

Ocen Emmanuel
Emmanuel, 12, lives in Apac District with his family where he enjoys reading, football and making toys. He helps with washing utensils and sweeping. He dreams of becoming a priest who shares God’s word and guides communities with hope.

Lokudu Hillary
Hillary, 12, lives in Laliya with his mother and helps with sweeping, fetching water and washing utensils. He loves his school and teachers. He dreams of becoming a plumber who builds toilets in every school and teaches communities about sanitation.

Delucco Paul
Paul, 12, lives with his mother, a teacher, and his stepfather who burns charcoal. He helps at home with his younger brother. He dreams of becoming a scientist who studies animal science, cross-breeds pigs and improves farming for families.

Alol Sherry Martha
Sherry, 12, lives with her father and siblings and studies hard with the encouragement from family meetings at home. She dreams of becoming a doctor and building the Snow Light Medical Centre to treat the sick, especially orphans.

Aber Samantha
Samantha, 12, lives with her parents and sisters. Her father burns charcoal and her mother sells vegetables. She helps her mother at the market during holidays. She dreams of becoming a senior pilot who flies across the world and supports her family’s future.

Akello Rebecca
Rebecca, 12, lives in Lacekocot with her parents and brothers and helps with fetching water and cooking. At home she studies hard for a better future. She dreams of becoming a laboratory doctor who supports her family and helps many people.

Lamunu Ruth Triumph
Ruth, 12, lives in Laliya with her mother and siblings and helps with chores like washing uniforms and caring for her sister. She dreams of becoming a surgeon who saves lives or a lawyer who defends innocent people when they need support.

Lamaro Angel Faith
Angel, 12, lives in Kitgum District with her parents, six sisters and two brothers. Evenings at home include stories by the fire. She dreams of becoming a policewoman who protects people and important places and serves her community with care.

Innocent, 13, lives in Lamogi Sub-county where cattle raiders stole land and harmed his family. At home he helps with daily tasks. He dreams of becoming a pilot who flies across continents and a soldier who promotes peace and security in his district.

Acen Marion
Marion, 13, lives with her parents and siblings and helps with selling and gardening during holidays. At home she studies for a better future. She dreams of becoming a senior doctor who treats people in towns across Uganda and supports her parents.

Aber Prossy Esther
Prossy, 13, lives with her grandmother who works hard selling vegetables to pay her school fees. At home she helps with chores and caring for her sisters. She dreams of becoming a senior doctor who heals the sick and builds a brighter future for others.

Almongo Mirrian Awori
Miriam, 13, lives with her parents and siblings and helps with morning chores. At home she studies biology. She dreams of becoming a mental health doctor who discovers medicine for illness and supports women who have suffered trauma.

Lamwaka Beatrice
Beatrice, 13, lives in with her mother, a priest who helps neighbours in need. At home Beatrice cooks traditional dishes and helps with chores. She dreams of becoming a leader who protects her community and serves her country with fairness.

Lacwech Prisca
Prisca, 13, lost both parents to illness and now cares for her grandmother at home. She studies and helps with chores. She dreams of becoming a doctor who discovers medicine for cancer and kidney failure and also hopes to study astronomy.

Mabongo Ben Deliaash
Deli, 14, lives at Kabedopong Centre with his mother who sells vegetables to pay fees while he studies and helps at home. He dreams of becoming a politician who brings services closer to poor people and treats neighbours with respect and care.

Aber Daphine Linda
Daphine, 14, lives with her mother who works with Seeds for Development. At home she studies hard. She dreams of becoming a doctor who provides HIV medicine and testing to save lives and care for families in her community.

Oyella Beyoncy
Beyoncy, 14, was born in South Sudan and now lives in Gulu City, with her family. At home she studies and helps with chores. She dreams of becoming an engineer who lifts her family from poverty and improves their living standards.

Wale Genesis Taban
Wale, 14, is a South Sudanese pupil at Opit Modern Primary School who lost his parents. At home he sweeps the compound, feeds the animals and helps in the garden. He dreams of becoming an ambassador who restores peace in South Sudan.

Veronica
Veronica, 14, lives with her mother, siblings and grandmother. Evenings at home are spent by the fire listening to stories. She dreams of becoming an archaeologist and hopes to research medicine that helps fight HIV in Uganda.

Zulckha Mohammad
Mohammad, 14, lost both parents and is cared for by his sister, who pays her school fees. At home he helps by digging in the garden during holidays. He dreams of becoming a doctor who treats sick people and makes his family proud.

Cecilia Simon Angeto
Cecilia, 11, fled from South Sudan because of the war and lives with her mother and sisters. At home she helps with daily work. She dreams of becoming both a moderator who promotes peace and an engineer who builds houses, schools and hospitals.

Apollo Brenda
Brenda, 14, lives in Kitgum District with her mother and brother. She helps her mother sell goods in the market and cooks meals. She dreams of becoming a bank manager who helps her family and builds a hospital for her community.

Ayee Angel Promise
Angel, 14, lives in Layibi with her mother and sister and studies science with determination. At home she helps where needed. She dreams of becoming a scientist who studies planets and makes discoveries, following her late father’s inspiring dream.

Amito Mary Precious
Mary, 15, lost both parents in a fire and is cared for by her aunt who sells bananas. At home she studies despite hardship. She dreams of becoming a Member of Parliament who builds schools, fights poverty and strengthens security for communities.

Aber Roseline Desire
Roseline, 16, lost her mother to sickle cell disease and now lives between her father, stepmother and grandmother. At home she studies hard for exams. She dreams of becoming a pilot and hopes to pass with flying colours so she can support her family.

Obedi Abraham Okot
Abraham, 16, lives with his uncle and enjoys visiting his grandparents in the countryside. At home he helps where he can. He dreams of becoming an electrician who supports his family, restores happiness and succeeds in life through learning and skill.

Lamunu Hope Bridget
Bridget, 9, lives with her family and loves drawing. At home she helps with chores before evening lessons. She dreams of becoming an artist who travels widely and showing what she sees and feels through thoughtful, careful pictures.

Moigo George William
George, in Primary Seven, comes from a farming family in Amuru District and helps with garden work at home. He dreams of becoming a scientist who studies the human brain and also Uganda’s president who fights corruption and restores land.

Aber Flavia Michelle
Flavia is in Primary Six and helps her farmer parents by selling mangoes to pay her school fees. At home she studies and works in the garden. She dreams of becoming a heart doctor and a journalist, combining science and words to help others.

Lamunu Claire Atim
Claire is in Primary Seven and lives with her stepfather and mother, who has lung cancer. At home she helps while studying. She dreams of becoming a psychiatrist who supports people living with mental illness and brings thoughtful care to families.
